I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I read the book years ago so I was familiar with the characters and storyline. The film is well cast and the leads have a chemistry that makes you root for them to all stick together & work everything out. I think the thing that surprised me the most was how director Vicky Wight managed to make Texas itself a lead role in the film. She captured both the immensity of the Houston skyline and the charm of the small town dancehall. The shots of the central Texas countryside make you feel how its beauty and serenity could provide comfort to someone who'd lost their way. Just wish I could have seen it on the big screen (darn quarantine.

Abby gets suspended from school for punching her bully and, although Libby is upset with James for teaching her karate, she realizes Abby trusted James to tell her about the bullying issues while she had been too afraid to talk about it with Libby and adding to her stress. Later in the film Abby is suspended again for using curse words with her bully, who had hit her in the head. James drives Libby to school to pick Abby up, and when he runs into her bully, he threatens him. James had stepped in to help her constantly, as her new boyfriend had left her as soon as things got hard. One day, Libby decides to visit the big abandoned house again and finds a picture of her as a baby with Aunt Jean and Frank. She confronts Aunt Jean about it, finding out that Marsha had abandoned her as a newborn and left her at that house at the care of her grandparents. However, due to their delicate health, it was Aunt Jean who had cared for her for 4 years. After 4 years, Marsha came back for the grandmother's funeral and upon seeing how happy Aunt Jean was with Libby, took her back. Libby drives to Marsha's home to confront her about it. Marsha says she was only 18 at the time and needed time to mature, to which Libby replies that she should have just left her with Aunt Jean and she could have had a better life. Libby goes back to the farm and asks Aunt Jean to let her restore the house, so she can live there with her children, assuring her that she will continue to take care of the farm. As much as she has lost during the past year, Libby has finally found a place that feels like home. In the end scene, we see Libby fixing the house when James comes by to tell her he had been helping his ex-wife move in with her parents, so they could take care of her. This better be a “Safe Haven” trilogy or I dont want it. This is my parents house: welcome. I love how she seems more shocked about the 2 then he does about the 169. He's literally keeping someone in an underground bunker? Sounds dumb. I'm so glad I didn't watch the traier before watching the movie, this literally shows everything. Trailers need a complete change of structure, just an artistic view and edition in less than 40 seconds and that's it. They ruin everything, but I guess the industry don't even care. Good movie tho.

You know I am a sucker for romance movie cliches but this one had all the ones I didn't like. So I admit I didn't stay for the whole movie. But first cliche I don't like (1) not telling the audience what happened. We open with Libby looking at a woman scornfully and then she moves out to east bum foo Iowa or something. But it is all a mystery for far too long, 2) Libby meets her love interest and hates him, for no apparent reason, and love interest hates Libby and tries to put her through the ringer on the farm. I hate this cliche because most people are polite to people they don't know. and (3) girl is emotional mess, imho, far beyond reason so that the love interest will have to "heal her. This is the kind of thing which may work better as a book than a movie but I couldn't continue.
